Tipping Slag tatami mat The pumping hall of WestMolten slag spills from a ladle at Port Kembla Steelworks, the glowing orange liquid throwing dense clouds of steam as it hits cooler air. Slag is the unavoidable by product of iron and steel production, separated from the metal in the blast furnace and tapped off before the iron moves on. Port Kembla Steelworks has been producing iron this way since No. 1 blast furnace was blown in on 29 August 1928. Part of the BlueScope Port Kembla series.
