It gets its name from the butterfly shaped disc inside the valve that rotates to open or close the flow. When the valve is fully open, the disc is positioned parallel to the flow direction, allowing unobstructed passage of water. When the valve is closed, the disc is turned perpendicular to the flow, effectively blocking the flow of water.
