FCV makes smoking less harsh and causes more deforestation than other leaf types historically and currently (figure 1).2 1028 Zimbabwe is an obvious location to study FCV because it is a major producer of FCV globally and tobacco-related deforestation is significant: it is the third largest producer of FCV globally29 and FCV is a principal export,30 31 comprising, in 2024, 99.95% of the value of Zimbabwes tobacco leaf exports.32 (Author calculation) Ninety per cent of Africas tobacco is grown in the Miombo dry tropical forest, which covers seven countries including Zimbabwes North East where FCV production conditions are ideal.21 26 33 34 Recent research indicates that action is required to avoid irreversible FCV curing-related ecosystem damage to Miombo woodlands.21 3537 FCV growing in Zimbabwe also threatened the environment and farmers health via the significant use of agrochemicals.38 39 FCV growers in Zimbabwe represent low-cost labour chiefly made up of smallholders, including children.38 40 Despite the relatively inexpensive workforce, the majority of Zimbabwean smallholders report being unhappy with profits and bearing tobacco-related debt
